When did saying Hello become such a novel concept?
Its Thanksgiving here in America and its given me a chance to stay home for the first time since I arrived here on October 18th. Other then Thanksgiving being more then a whole month later what else is different you ask…Well perhaps the most fantastical and wonderful is that people here look you straight in eyes and say hello! After almost ten years in Vancouver BC this might be the most mind-blowing revelation…I;m by nature a friendly person, a people person, tribal in my genes and generally less comfortable alone then in a group. Thats just me. So after years of living in a place where saying hello is almost never done and often viewed as weird and perhaps even threatening the number of times I am greeted daily by complete strangers is simply breathtaking and NICE! Please don’t get me wrong I love Vancouver and I have some very close friends there and people I truly love but even they would likely scream in the other direction at having to say hello as often as I get to now to complete strangers…Every day, Everywhere and all the time. Yes I’m in a small town in Virginia but I noticed the same thing a coupla weeks ago in Raleigh Durham North Carolina, again in Washington DC and again in Baltimore. Its NICE.
I like it here…Im getting to do work I love with people who are passionate about what they do and best of all everyone says Hello:)
Happy Thanksgiving to my American Friends and Family and to you all a warm HELLO!
